Embrace Pain, Seek Happiness

Dear friend,

I hope this email finds you well.

Today, I want to share a thought that has transformed my perspective on life and growth:

If you avoid pain, you will suffer; if you chase pleasure, you will avoid happiness.

Pain vs suffering. Pleasure vs happiness.

These concepts often feel intertwined, yet they lead us down drastically different paths. Let me explain.

Pain is temporary; it’s a challenge, a test, and, ultimately, a teacher.

Suffering, on the other hand, is eternal when we avoid pain altogether.

Think about the gym: you hire a trainer, pay them to push you to your limits, and endure physical pain so that you can grow stronger.

That pain leads to something lasting—muscle, health, and confidence.

Contrast that with avoiding the gym because it’s hard and uncomfortable.

That avoidance leads to suffering in the form of poor health, low energy, and regret.

Now consider pleasure and happiness.

Pleasure is fleeting—a momentary high. Happiness, though, is enduring and fulfilling.

Let’s take an example: the thrill of an affair may feel pleasurable in the moment, but the aftermath—guilt, broken trust, and hurt—is long-lasting.

True happiness comes from honesty, integrity, and building relationships on a foundation of love and respect.

As Viktor Frankl said, “What is to give light must endure burning.”

Pain, when faced with courage, becomes the spark that ignites growth. It’s not something to run from but to embrace.

So, here’s my challenge to you:

  • Face your pain head-on, knowing it’s the bridge to something greater.

  • Resist instant gratification and commit to the habits that lead to genuine happiness.

  • Remember that every rep at the gym, every hard conversation, every moment of discomfort is temporary, but the results can last a lifetime.

Growth begins where comfort ends.

Lean into the discomfort and let it shape you into the person you’re meant to become.

To your success and happiness,
Arnolds.
